The Buick GNX was GMs fastest sedan ever and remains among Detroit's quickest and most collectible vehicles of all time. It was created to commemorate the final production run of the Grand national. 1987 was the only production year and 547 were made, all were optioned identically with a serialized plaque on the dash. In a collaboration between Buick and ASC/McLaren, Grand nationals were assembled at the Buick assembly line and brought to ASC for the GNX conversion.
Car and Driver tested a GNX and recorded a 0 to 60 time of 4.7 seconds and the quarter mile came up in 13.5 seconds at 102 MPH.
Among the components unique to a GNX and no longer available in NOS form for would be restorers are a ceramic turbine wheel turbocharger to improve boost response with low drag dynamic turbine shaft seals and a built in contamination trap. A special high efficiency intercooler. A recalibrated PROM chip. Special transmission with an auxiliary cooler. Rear ladder bars and a Panhard rod for a GNX only redesigned suspension geometry for improved rear wheel traction and better overall vehicle handling characteristics. Special rear axle cover. Extra bracing behind the back seat. GNX only chassis bracing. Front fender heat dissipation vents. Fender flares and unique GNX only wheels. Special instrument package with full analog instrumentation including tachometer,speedometer,turbo-boost gauge,coolant temperature,oil pressure and fuel level gauges.16 inch aluminum alloy wheels in place of the Grand Nationals 15 inch wheels with Eagle Goodyear Gatorback radial tires and modified wheel openings with fender flares to accommodate the larger wheels and tires.
We are the second owners of GNX # 41 which was purchased for the original owner by his wife in 1987 as a surprise birthday present for her husband. The original owner an Arizona resident being one of the country's largest collectors of world war II era automobiles stored the car in Arizona and drove it 534 miles in 17 years. The original owner was so fastidious he never washed or waxed the car in 17 years to avoid creating any surface rust.
GNX # 41 has been stored in Arizona it's entire life and is totally factory original and pristine. Every document and record has been retained including the original birthday ribbon found on the car for the original owners birthday.
GNX # 41 was recently photgraphed by renowned automotive journalist David Newhardt at the Las Vegas Speedway for Randy Leffingwell's new best selling book entitled "MUSCLE AMERICA'S LEGENDARY PERFORMANCE CARS". #41 is featured on page 356 and 357 of this incredible must read book!
