Number 888 was in the possession of the original owner until 2001. The original owner being deaf ordered it in 1967 without a radio. The second owner looking for an original owner 67 GT500 researched all 1967 GT 500s using the SAAC registry and determined in the spring of 2001 that #888 was still in the hands of it's original owner. Unable to speak to each other the original owner scribbled his non negotiable purchase price on the dust of the back window for the second owner who agreed to the price. This unusual negotiation was recorded in pictures by the second owner. When sold the car had 55,000 original miles and still was completely factory original. The body panels were also original and pristine, as was the glass and interior. The car also retains a ton of original paperwork including the ultra rare original 1967 Shelby owners manual supplement.
The second owner probably should have simply just cleaned and detailed the car and showed it as one of the finest unrestored Shelby's in the country. But instead chose to spare no expense on a total body off restoration at Curt Vogt's Cobra Automotive in Connecticut which was completed at a cost of well over 100K in 2004.
In addition to a restoration the second owner had Cobra automotive remove and preserve the engine and build and install another 600 HP race motor with upgraded brakes. Thus creating a car that can be admired and driven just the way Mr. Shelby intended.
Shelby collector and author of the Complete book of Shelby heard about this car and purchased it for his private collection from the second owner. I saw it at Colin's shop and made him an offer he couldn't refuse bringing the car to Vegas.
# 888 has recently been featured in Randy Leffingwell's superb new book entitled "SHELBY RACER FOR THE STREET". David Newhardt perhaps the worlds best Automotive photographer shot the pictures of #888 which can be found on pages 98 through 101 of this must read Shelby book.
