What is a car's value?
How do you know whether you are paying to much? Obviously the most difficult
question to answer and perhaps the most controversial. We have found
from over 20 years of buying exotic and classic cars that logic
tends to get brushed aside in favor of emotion. Our private collection is filled
with cars that were fully priced when we purchased them and because
they had a special meaning to us we were willing to pay a premium for
a premium car.
For example we purchased
a fully priced 1998 Dodge Viper GT 2 of which 100 were sold to the public
in 1998. The car was sold by the original dealer to us on an open MSO
with 54 miles and the plastic and window sticker still on the seats
and window.
We love Vipers, we believe they are the only hand built American muscle
car ever built. We think the GTS coupes built from 1996 to 2002 have
classic lines and shape and are current modern classics. Therefore all
logic aside we were willing to pay a premium for our GT2 because it
was worth it to us to own that rare car in that condition. We probably
paid to much but we didn’t buy it to sell it we bought it to enjoy
owning it.
Because it is rare and desirable
the market will eventually catch up to us should we ever decide to sell
it.
That I guess sums up our
philosophy about how much to pay for a car. What is it worth to you
to own a particular car that may be your dream car in perfect shape
with your dream colors and options like you would have ordered when
new if you could.
Therefore
if you have come to us looking for a discount car you are probably looking
in the wrong place. But while you are here surf over to our private collection to look at some really cool cars we have in all likelihood paid to much
for!
Our inventory of cars for
sale will be quite small and they are all cars we like to drive and
would own ourselves and probably do. We only buy premium cars after
a thorough some would say anal investigation and generally drive sellers
nuts with the level of our investigation.
Our family tells us we have
the buying of incredible cars down to a science but need therapy on
the selling part. So don’t be surprised if when you call on a
car for sale we have decided to keep it for ourselves. We will not buy
a single car for resale that we wouldn’t keep for ourselves to
own and enjoy.
However for those of you
who feel more comfortable with a price guide or Evaluation book. These
are the ones we have found to be reliable.
Keith Martins sports car
market Magazine and pocket price guide. We are gold level subscribers
to his service and find it to be fun and somewhat helpful. We say somewhat
because even Keith can’t keep up with the appreciation level of
premium musclecars. But he is quite good on current exotics and sportscars.
You can subscribe and buy his guide by calling 800 289 2819
We also recommend the National
auto research Black Book price guide. The information found in this
book is taken from actual sales at collector car auctions and is therefore
relatively accurate but sometimes dated. Also many newer exotics don’t
sell through these auctions and are not covered but it is still a great
source, we think.
We hope you enjoy surfing
our website and perhaps find it somewhat informative as well.
